Canon Gave Its New Macro Lens a Built-In Ring Flash

Canon just unveiled one of its better lenses in recent memory and, oddly enough, it’s for the long neglected EOS M mirrorless system. Just the sixth lens for the system since Canon launched it nearly four years ago, the upcoming EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is notable for a few reasons. Ditching the long focal lengths preferred by most macro photographers, the innovative design instead employs a built-in ring flash with two user-controlled “Macro Lites” that allow the shooter to easily adjust the intensity of the lighting. The lens is also tapered to prevent it from casting shadows on the subject when getting in close for detailed shots. According to Canon, not only is it the first-ever macro with the built-in ring, it’s also the world’s lightest autofocus lens.

For more on the lens, head on over to Canon’s website. The EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is due out June 30 and can be pre-ordered online now for $299.99 USD.
