This Add-On Lets You Play Game Boy Cartridges on Your Android
Fans of late ’90s to early ’00s Nintendo video games can’t believe their luck. Last week saw the announcement that Nintendo are set to release a mobile game which allows players to capture Pokémon in real life, and now tech company Hyperkin has unveiled an add-on that lets your Android phone play Gameboy cartridges.
The company has just started taking pre-orders for the device, named the Smart Boy Development Kit, which is set for release just before the holiday season. It costs $60 and comes complete with those large Gameboy buttons and a cartridge slot.
Originally, the Smart Boy was designed to be both an iPhone and Android smartphone accessory. However, at the 2016 E3 trade show, Hyperkin was very clear when they said that it will only be available for Android devices. Given the abundance of Game Boy emulators available on the Google Play Store and the lack of customization on the iPhone, it’s disappointing but not very surprising news.
Nevertheless, this is the closest you’ll get to reviving your childhood without foraging around your parents’ attic for the original consoles. The Smart Boy Development Kit is available to pre-order now over at Hyperkinlab.com.
